Great Unit So Far : Sharp CV-P10NC 10,00 BTU Portable Air Conditioner
I was somewhat baffled by the rather polarized reviews of this unit. I saw the Rc (instead of Nc) version at Costco and view I would give it a try to find out for myself. After a quick assembly of the window adapter kit I gave it a test run. It is de facto a reasonably quiet Ac at low fan speed and there is plenty of cool air advent out the front. However, the hose in the back that vents the hot air is not insulated at all. So some of the heat is put back into the room. The window kit panels are thin, and that allows heat to come into the room much more than the window glass would. There are small holes in the coupling that leaks some hot air directly into the room. And if one doesn't do a good job sealing around the edges, more hot air would come into the room. Perhaps this is the infer why some habitancy find the unit cool well while others don't. To get maximum performance, one clearly must do something to insulate the hose and the window kit. I have some large white styrofoam sheets lying around, so I used them to loosely wrap around the hose, leaving some air space between the hose and the wrapper. It doesn't look great, but at least the test shows that the cooling carrying out is much better. Most Ac units carry an Eer rating for power efficiency. I was surprised that this portable unit does not. Having seen it works, I can understand why. The cooling efficiency can vary a lot depending on how thought about one seals the holes and cracks, and also do some extra insulation for the hose. Not paying attention would be like putting a toaster right behind the Ac, cooling in the front and heating in the back. In sum, the Ac unit itself is fine, but the carrying out depends on how well you forestall the heat from advent back into the room. I ended up returning the unit myself because it doesn't fit with the room I wanted to cool, took up too much floor space and look too unsightly after all the extra insulation I had to put on. I give it a 3-star neutral rating because I can see it beneficial in some situations, just not mine.
